UVC 23 Recap

TeamMadHouse Member Spencer Kirksey & Dan “Dragon” Spohn

The Aladdin Shrine Center in Columbus Ohio was the site for another great Ultimate Victory Challenge fight card this past Friday. UVC 23 hosted both amateur and professional fights. The place was packed to watch notable fighters such as Marc Cofer, Cornelius Godfrey, Dan Spohn and Luke Zachrich. Although some fights might not have reached the crowds high expectations, most delivered. Almost everyone leaving the UVC 23 event went home satisfied.

Jordan Schembri vs. Austin Durbin

The opening fight for UVC 23 featured bantamweights Jordan Schembri and Austin Durbin. Schembri controlled everything on the ground and unfortunately for Durbin, that’s where the fight took place. Schembri locked in a north-south choke at 2:10 of round 1 to get the win and move to 3-0.

Ronnie Shoemaker vs. Jeff Dotson

Featherweights Ronnie Shoemaker and Jeff Dotson started off slow. The first round consisted of a few scrambles on the ground and a suplex by Shoemaker. In the second round Shoemaker came out with a little bit more energy than Dotson. After a stuffed Dotson takedown, Shoemaker took his back and got the rear-naked choke at 1:38 of round 2. Shoemaker is now 8-3.

Corey Dulaney vs. Robert McPherson

Lightweights Corey Dulaney and Robert McPherson were both undefeated coming into this fight. That could only mean one thing… someone’s 0 had to go!  This action packed fight gave the crowd multiple slams and submission attempts. In the end Corey Dulaney received the unanimous decision nod to remain undefeated at 5-0.

Aaron Hughes vs. Donny Korbel

The main event for the amateurs was between bantamweights Aaron Hughes and Donny Korbel. This fast paced fight had every aspect of MMA in it. Both fighters had multiple dominate positions throughout. In the end the judges determined that Donny Korbel earned the split decision victory moving him to 7-5.

Augusta Tindall vs. Joe Heiland

Lightweights Augusta Tindall and Joe Heiland put on a show for fans in what was arguably the fight of the night. The fight was mostly standup with a few instances where it touched the mat. Heiland definitely won in the takedown department but Tindall gave him hell with his striking, rocking Heiland late in round 3. Ultimately, the few takedowns and ground and pound Heiland landed won him the fight by split decision. He is now 9-2-1.

Aaron Mays vs. Dan Spohn

The fight between light heavyweights Aaron Mays and Dan Spohn seemed to end as soon as it began. Mays got a quick takedown but it was obvious that Spohn was comfortable off his back. Spohn locked in a quick and tight armbar that ended the fight at 2:41 in round 1. Spohn is now 8-3 with his only losses coming in Bellator Fighting Championship.

Marcus Finch vs. Luke Zachrich

In the main event of the evening, middleweights Marcus Finch and Luke Zachrich looked to settle a long time disliking of one another. Zachrich picked apart Finch standing and on the ground. Zachrich was very patient in his approach, passing Finch’s guard whenever he liked. The one sided fight ended with Zachrich winning by unanimous decision. He is now 12-2 and thinking about hanging up the gloves although he did not come out and say it officially.

Other notable winners on the night were Matt Anderson who won by second round armbar, Cornelius Godfrey who won by unanimous decision and Marc Cofer who also won by unanimous decision.
