Trahan wins Main Event of Combat Zone At Rockingham Park

TRAHAN PREVAILS IN MAIN EVENT OF COMBAT ZONE 50;

PILLA RETAINS BELT IN CO-MAIN EVENT

SALEM,NH- Taylor Trahan, who won his first fight as an 18-year-old at
Rockingham Park, returned to the racetrack’s packed Sports Club to
capture the main event of Combat Zone MMA 50 in a razor thin unanimous
decision over Worcester firefighter Evan Parker on Friday night.

Trahan,23, utilized better cage control in three close rounds to improve
to 5-1 when all three judges scored the fight in his favor 29-28.

“It was probably my continuous pressure. He got his rhythm pretty quick
and was starting to capitalize on it, so I knew I had to keep the pressure
on,” said Trahan, who runs an MMA school in Bethlehem, NH and is a
newly-wed.  “It was really nice to be back here and I appreciated the
crowd support, but it was not my best fight and I wasn’t happy with it. I
don’t know if I was nervous coming off my knee surgery. But I’ll
be back better than ever.”

In the co-main event on the “Carpe Diem” card, current Combat Zone
featherweight belt holder Jake “The Gorilla” Pilla retained his belt
and upped his record to 4-0 by dispensing with the previously undefeated
James Squires via rear naked choke hold in 1:42 of the first round.

Squires,an officer in the National Guard, got in a strike at the outset
and executed the take down, and then the two fighters locked up. But Pilla,
who hails from Billerica, MA, was able to shake free and demonstrated once
again his superior strength by forcing Squires, who dropped to 2-1, to tap
out.

“I went out there determined to win,” said Pilla, who praised his
coach, UFC fighter John “Doomsday” Howard. “I’m going to keep
going, hopefully, all the way to the UFC.”

The other pro fight marked the professional debut of Kenny Murphy of
Hooksett, NH, formerly the #1 ranked amateur in the bantamweight division,
against the more experienced Chad Kelly from Gardner, MA. In the early
going, Murphy put together a nice combination of strikes and kicks but when
he was rushing in for his next move,“Machine Gun” Kelly blasted him
with a left hook that knocked him out cold.

Kelly, from Fighting Arts Academy, improved to 3-1 in notching the KO in
:58 of round 1 while Murphy, representing Team Link in Hooksett, has a
record of 0-1.

When Dave Spero, the owner of Spero’s MMA in Atkinson, NH entered the
cage to face his former student Sean Seaburg from Haverill, MA, they had
already gone the distance in a brutal battle of words exchanged on social
media. The bad blood between them was evident in their welterweight fight,
as both came out gunning from the opening bell.

Spero, who said before the fight that he wanted to knock out his opponent
or rip his arm off, averted a bull rush across the cage from Seaburg, but
couldn’t take down the bigger man. Seaburg, making his MMA debut, then
got Spero on the mat and was landing some solid strikes. But the teacher
was able to turn the tables and execute the rear naked choke in 1:42 of
round 1.

“Thank you fans. Whether you love me or hate me, you’re here and
supporting the sport,” said Spero, who improved to 5-2  and was voted the
Chang’s Tae Kwan do America amateur fighter of the night.

In the first fight of the night,  first timer Taylor Mears went right for
the take down then made light work of  Scott Coburn (0-3) from Haverhill,
MA, forcing him to tap out via an arm triangle in only :56 of the first
round. Mears (1-0) represented Lakes Region Vale Tudo. In the next fight
Lakes Region Vale Tudo teammate CoreyCohen (0-1) didn’t fare as well in
his debut, submitting when Mike Scappachio (2-0)of Plaistow, NH and
Spero’s MMA executed the arm bar in only :27 of the first round.

Combat Zone 51 returns to Rockingham Park on Nov. 21 with another full card
of exciting MMA action.
