FIVE title bouts are set to headline Battle Arena’s ‘Night of Champions’ when Europe’s biggest amateur mixed martial arts promotion opens 2013 with a mammoth 25-fight card at Club Republic in Leicester on Saturday, February 23.
Hometown hero Ranjeet Baria, of Leicester Shootfighters, is amongst those fighting it out for a British belt and will no doubt be able to count on plenty of local support when he takes on Fight Hub’s Jake Ocean at 71.5kg.
Ocean was recently named in the Team GB squad for this year’s two Fighters Source tournaments in South Korea and the USA, and national team mate Josh Neale (Warriors MMA) is also in contention for a British title in his 57kg showdown with Phillip Tomkin (Devil’s Pit).
The two other British title bouts see Charlie Fensom face James Bray and Bobby Gaze take on Matthew Bolsover. In National title action, natural showman Kevin Richardson is up against Johnny Gillan.
“This is the best fight night that we have ever put on,” said Battle Arena CEO James Price.
“We are show casing a lot of the UK’s top amateur talent. The title fights all promise to be exceptional bouts and there is a lot of hype surrounding all the fighters.
“We are also very pleased with the undercard that actually includes members of the GB Fighters Source team fighting. Fights nights do not get any better than this!”
Although the title bouts are the main attraction, a stacked undercard full of 50-50 contests and some of the most talented amateur fighters from these shores and beyond promise to provide the perfect warm-up.
Ocean and Neale’s fellow Team GB squad members Ryan James, Den Palmer and Sam Hill are in action on the card, while French gym Le Battle Combat Club are adding an international flavour by sending over Mohammed Addajou, Jean Noel Chanllais and Quinto Coronne.
Along with Baria, Leicester Shootfighters are set to have Jake Constantinou, James Jones, Alex Feary, Daniel Townsend and Kiro Kiffin in action. Also representing the host city are Gannon’s MMA trio Gianni Biggenshaw, and Paul and Lewis Gannon, and 1st Legion gym quintet Paul Antoni, Josh McManus, Daniel Szuper, Wade Bass and Junior Bueno.
Price picked three to watch out for, saying: “With Den Palmer against Azi Thomas we see two very experienced stand-up fighters come together in what promises to be a fight to remember. Den has a very good Thai game and Azi is a top class boxer.
“Michael Zaskorski showed he has a really well rounded fight style when he made his last appearance on our show. He is very durable and very fit. Alex Feary always keeps the crowds entertained; he has top level wrestling skills and don’t be surprised if he comes up with a crowd pleasing take down.
“Rob Vials against Mohammed Addajou is one of our international bouts of the night. Young Prodigy Rob has proper knock out power in his hands and a good grappling game. Mohammed is an up and coming amateur fighter from France who also isn’t afraid to exchange, so I think this fight will be awesome.”
Tickets for Battle Arena’s ‘Night of Champions’ show at Club Republic in Leicester on Saturday, February 23 are on sale now at £25 or £350 for a VIP table that seats ten. Doors open at 2pm.
