Los Angeles, CA – On Sunday, August 24, University of MMA: Fight Night 8 will once again showcase the depth of amateur MMA talent California has to offer. Three title fights featuring some of the top ranked talent in the state headline the show, bolstered by the long-awaited U of MMA debut for pro wrestler Scorpio Sky and a featherweight clash that is guaranteed to deliver a full night of exciting MMA action at Club Nokia at L.A. LIVE. Tickets are now on sale at www.UofMMA.com and www.axs.com.
The University of MMA light heavyweight and welterweight championships will be defended at Fight Night 8, asDominick ‘The Devastator’ Reyes (Cage Combat Academy) and Roman ‘The Gladiator’ Todorovich (Elite Training Center) put their respective titles on the line for the first time, each facing his most credible and dangerous challenge to date.
University of MMA veteran Tommy ‘The Spaniard’ Aaron (Elite Training Center) welcomes newcomer Cameron ‘Showtime’ Underhill (Aguirre’s Fight System) to crown a new University of MMA featherweight champion. The undefeated Aaron finally gets his title shot after injuries sidelined him earlier this year. Scheduling conflicts further complicated a title match for Aaron, who opted to stay busy. The result was a shocking 11-second head kick knockout win at Fight Night 7, which was featured on Inside MMA. And although Underhill’s name might not be recognizable to U of MMA fans, the man they call ‘Showtime’ is not to be taken lightly. He’s a veteran of several amateur promotions, including King of the Cage, and reigns as the Gladiator Challenge featherweight champion.
Initially scheduled to take place at Fight Night 7, the welterweight matchup between Roman ‘The Gladiator’ Todorovich (Elite Training Center) and Shohei ‘Keji Toro’ Yamamoto (CSW) has only garnered more intrigue.
Todorovich won the belt at Fight Night 5 in a fight of the night performance, and will now defend his title against Yamamoto, an internationally acclaimed Kyokushin karate competitor who stands undefeated in MMA. ‘Keji Toro,’ which translates from Japanese as ‘Caged Tiger,’ boasts four first-round finishes, and is a protégé of former UFC heavyweight champion Josh ‘The Warmaster’ Barnett.
University of MMA light heavyweight champion Dominick ‘The Devastator’ Reyes (Cage Combat Academy) has a fast turnaround in defending his belt, after winning it at Fight Night 7 in June, against the very experienced Shane ‘Huggy Bear’ Mervau (West Coast Jiu Jitsu). Reyes, currently the number two-ranked light heavyweight in the California Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Athletic Organization (CAMO) system, reigns supreme with a 4-0 record. Mervau ranks eighth in the rankings and is no stranger to high-level competition.
“For our 10th show at Club Nokia, we really wanted to put together something memorable as a tribute to the entire Southern California MMA community, meaning the gyms, fighters, coaches, and fans. I think we’ve done it with this fight card and show,” explained U of MMA matchmaker Turi Altavilla.
Also featured at Fight Night 8 will be the U of MMA debut of Schuyler Andrews, better known as the internationally recognized pro wrestler ‘Scorpio Sky’ (The Guild). Both the amateur MMA and independent pro wrestling communities have been abuzz since Sky announced his intentions to fight at the U of MMA earlier this year. Now, they’ll have more to discuss, as Sky takes on the very dangerous Jose ‘Red Devil’ Jovel (Dream Killer Fight Team), who owns the record for fastest knockout in U of MMA history (five seconds).
A multi-time pro wrestling champion who’s worked in Japan and with the WWE and TNA/Impact Wrestling, Sky has held notable belts such as the NWA International Television Championship and the CWFH (Championship Wrestling From Hollywood) Heritage Heavyweight Championship. Jovel himself is no slouch, known for powerful, rapid-fire hands and a wild, all-out brawling style.
In what already has the makings of a classic, U of MMA fan favorites Ryan ‘The Lion’ Lilley (Bas Rutten’s Elite MMA Gym) and A.J. Bryant (XFit) come to loggerheads in a featherweight clash. With almost 14 matches cumulatively between them, Lilley and Bryant have (perhaps unknowingly) been on a collision course for each other since coming to the U of MMA in 2013. Both fighters’ respective reputations as exciting and fearless competitors precede them, as does their common mix of technical skill and unquestionable heart.
“I’m very proud not just that we were able to book as many fights on this show as we have, but also that all the guys on our show are taking on such
incredible challenges. Up and down the card, I think we’ve built our most thorough lineup of razor-close matches,” saidU of MMA matchmaker Jay Tan. “All credit goes to the fighters who stepped up and said ‘yes’.”
