If you want to see some of the best amateur fighters in the Midwest you need to tune in to Shofight XXIII on GFL.tv on Saturday night. There will be 4 title fights, a 56 year old fighter, and a Monster Bash. Check out my breakdown of ShoFIGHT XXIII.
This may be an undercard fight but expect an all-out brawl between Herbert Morgan and Joey Hutchinson. These two just love to throw hands and I see it being a dog fight. They throw down with anyone and that is to be respected. This is a rematch and I expect these guys to keep it standing. They both really need wins because they are coming of a few loses. Herbert Morgan told me “I feel strong, confident, and happy to get another chance to fight for ShoFIGHT again seeing as it’s the anniversary of my first win which was actually at ShoFIGHT 13. I’m going to come in smart use my skills to the best of my abilities and try to get that win.” Herbert is much better shape this fight and after losing to a choke in their first fight he wants revenge.
At 56 years old “Grandpa” Don Williams is one of the eldest MMA fighters and he has decided this fight will be his retirement fight. “Grandpa” is a fan favorite and you can expect the crowd will be cheering him on as he takes on Oklahoma heavyweight Doug Dainty.
Ross ‘The Dental Floss” Campbell (4-0) was originally supposed to fight Caleb Dye, but Caleb pulled out of the fight. ShoFIGHT is currently working on a replacement. Ross is an excellent grappler with improving stand up. I believe he deserves a spot in the ShoFight 24: ‘Branson Brawl’ on December 8th.
Alex Hawkins takes on Josh Churchill at welterweight. I have seen some of their fights online and I think that Alex is going to have an advantage with his wrestling and ground n pound.
Springfield Hybrid fighter Jayke ‘Nerdcore’ Wells is putting down his controller and getting back into the cage against Eric Morris at featherweight. ‘Nerdcore’ is a talented kid that is stepping up his level of competition every time he fights. I talked to Springfield Hybrid coach Shane Carpenter and he told me “You should expect something you have never seen in an amateur fight before.” I don’t know what he was talking about; I was thinking the twister to be honest. Not sure any amateur has pulled that off yet.
Army Combative fighter Steven Griggs and his opponent DeAlan Hicks are both dropping from light heavyweight to middleweight. Steven Griggs has heavy hands but I have seen DeAlan take some solid shots from a true heavyweight and his chin is granite. I see this fight being a battle to a decision.
MMAMadhouse sponsored fighter and top contender Daniel ‘Pit bull’ Blair (4-2) is taking on ShoFIGHT featherweight champion Aaron Roberson (7-1). I believe this fight can go either way and this is going to be a hell of a fight. Daniel Blair is an excellent wrestler and is a hard worker and I truly believe that if Daniel uses his wrestling and doesn’t get careless and put himself in a bad position then he can win this fight. Aaron has the advantage on the feet and is on a roll beating the toughest guys in the area and is looking defend the title and improve to 8-1.
#1 contender Miles McDonald (7-1) is coming into this fight to redeem his only loss to ShoFIGHT flyweight champion ‘Sweet Baby’ Ray Allard (14-4). The first fight at ShoFIGHT XV was a high paced slugfest and ended in McDonald getting caught in a guillotine. I think that this is going to be a very fast paced fight and I don’t see this fight going to a decision. Both of these fighters come to finish fights.
ShoFIGHT Middleweight Champion Rance ‘The Punisher’ Foust was originally supposed to face Chaz Rooks. Chaz Rooks came up with 10 different excuses to get out of this fight and told ShoFIGHT if they wanted him to fight that they would have to pay him. He also made demands that even a pro fighter would get laughed at for. Obviously ShoFIGHT is not going to illegally pay a fighter so Chaz Rooks is now off the card and will never be fighting at ShoFIGHT again. Rance Foust is now fighting Matthew Hatley. There’s not too many fighters that will step up and fight Rance Foust so I give Matthew credit for stepping up to fight one of the best fighters in the area. Matt said “I just feel like this is it u know? Everything I’ve worked for, all my dedication for this one shot at the title. I want that belt more than anything I’ve ever wanted in my entire life.”
In the main event the undefeated ShoFIGHT Heavyweight Champion Jason ‘Shrek’ Ostrowski (8-0) will be defending his title against PJ Sisco (13-4). PJ Sisco fights out of Tenth Planet Jiu Jitsu and predicted that he will armbar Shrek and “show him how an armbar is properly applied.” Both fighters hold multiple titles and this is going to be a huge fight and test for both guys. ‘Shrek’ is no joke and he has had several opponents back out before the fight so I know he is always ready to go to war with anyone willing to step across from him in the cage.
