ROY JONES JR’S SQUARE RING PROMOTIONS & ISLAND FIGHTS CHAMPIONSHIPS PARTNER UP TO CO-PROMOTE “ISLAND FIGHTS XXIV”
ALL PRO MMA EVENT SET FOR SEPTEMBER 6TH AT THE PENSACOLA BAY CENTER
PENSACOLA, Fla. (August 20, 2013)–Island Fights is set to make its 3 year anniversary on September 6th at the Pensacola Bay Center and it’s doing so with a bang. “We have put together our best fight card to date for this show,” said CEO of Island Fights Championships, Dean Toole. “It’s been a long time coming, and now we have decided to move forward into the professional MMA scene in a big way by partnering up long term with Roy Jones, Jr.’s Square Ring Promotions. We have already secured our next pro date in Pensacola at the Bay Center on February 8, 2014 and plan to take that show nationwide.”
“We’ve been watching what Dean has been doing with his Island Fights amateur shows here in Pensacola for the last couple of years and were really impressed with what we saw. His events are always packed, and he puts on great fights. That is why we decided to partner up with him on a long term basis for his pro shows to help him take them to the next level,” said Roy Jones, Jr. President of Square Ring Promotions. Square Ring Promotions has promoted a number of pro MMA events across the U.S. and was the first promoter to promote a nationally televised pay per view hybrid boxing and MMA event.
The main event on September 6th is sure to be a stand-up war with two colossal heavyweights, Bryan “The Lion” McVea vs. Dillon “Bad Boy” Cleckler. McVea will be making his way to Florida by way of Oklahoma City, OK. He is a professional kickboxer as well as a professional MMA fighter and currently holds the Rage Of Osage Heavyweight title. “I don’t see this fight going to the judges, none of my MMA fights have gone the distance. Cleckler likes to finish fights and so do I, one of us won’t be able to walk out of that ring without help!” said McVea.
McVea will have his work cut out for him when he enters the square ring to face the undefeated Pensacola native Dillon Cleckler. Cleckler, a college standout linebacker at the University Of Southern Mississippi has been on a reign of terror since making his MMA amateur debut just 3 years ago. Cleckler went undefeated 10-0 as an amateur and held the Island Fights Amateur Heavyweight title as well as the UCF Heavyweight title in Alabama. He has since gone 3-0 as a pro finishing all 3 opponents in the first round by either KO or TKO.
“This is my first time fighting at the Pensacola Bay Center. It’s been something I’ve wanted to do since I started training MMA. I love fighting at home in front of my family, friends and fans and can’t wait for the 6th,” said Cleckler.
The co-main event will feature Lanny Dardar vs. Frank Carrilllo. Dardar (10-5) is from Houma, LA and is currently the Gladiator Combat Lightweight Champion. “I’m going to use my boxing to control the stand up and use my speed and quickness to get to my feet, if we go to the ground. I’m not going to pick a round, but I think I can end the fight with a knockout,” said Dardar.
Facing Dardar is Frank Carrillo (6-2), who is a CFA and Bellator veteran. Carrillo was featured on Bellator’s new reality T.V show “Fight Masters”, but unfortunately he was forced out due to an injury. “Carrillo is known for his exciting fights and we couldn’t be more pumped to have him on this event”, said Toole.
The undercard will also feature Anderson Melo vs. Byron Byrd. Melo is a Muay Thai fighter as well as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. Melo is with MMA Masters fighting out of Miami, FL. Melo’s opponent is the very tough Byron Byrd from Orlando, Florida. Bryon was the M1 Global Light Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament winner as well as a Bellator Veteran.
Another amazing match-up is Raymond Camp vs Pensacola native Rance Jones Jr. Camp is fighting out of American Top Team in Port St. Lucie. He was 6-1 as an amateur and is currently 1-0 as a pro. He will be facing Rance Jones Jr. who was 17-2 as an amateur and is also 1-0 as a pro. Rance held both the 185 lb. and 170 lb. Island Fights titles as well as the UCF 185 lb. Title as an Amateur.
The next fight is already being called “The Fight Of The Night” and will feature Socrates “SOK” Pierre vs. Ryle Stous. Socrates is fighting out of Tallahassee Florida and is currently fighting with CFA with a 4-1 pro record. Stous is currently 2-0 as a pro and went 10-0 as an amateur holding the Island Fights 155 lb. title as well as the Atlas Fights 155 lb. title. “I can’t wait to see this fight and really proud that its part of this event. Both fighters are great athletes and just great guys in general. I’m really stoked for this one” says Toole, who also is the matchmaker for the show.
Rounding out the card is Shane Weinshicke vs. Matt Munsey, both from Tallahassee Florida. Escambia County local police officer Brian Smith will be making his Pro debut when he takes on Tallahassee’s golden boy Baraq Hunter. Port City MMA and former Island Fights and Atlas fights 155 lb. amateur champion Brock Weaver will be facing super tough opponent Craig McAlpine. Sky Rudloe (Tallahassee, FL) will be fighting Juan Muerro (Tampa FL). Christopher Thorne (American Top Team, Miramar, FL) will be fighting Paulo Silva (MMA Masters, Miami). And last but not least Tito Rodriguez (Darkside MMA, Tampa FL) will fight Jean Bellefeur (MMA Masters, Miami, FL).
