It’s not MMA but this is boxing’s biggest fight of the year and should be a great one. Stay tuned to MMA Madhouse for live results of this superfight being dubbed as the “Dream Match” between Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao.
The “Dream Match” hasn’t begun yet but we have our first surprise. There has been a lot of talk about the weight of the fighters. The fight is taking place in the welterweight division at 147 lbs. There’s been much talk about this because Manny is a five-division champion who holds a 135-pound lightweight belt and De La Hoya is primarily a 154-pound junior middleweight. Many have been saying De La Hoya is too big for Pacquiao. Yesterday at the weigh-ins De La Hoya weighed in at 145 lbs and Pacquiao weighed in at 142 lbs. So, I said we had a surprise right? Get this, just hours before the fight De La Hoya weighs 147 lbs and Manny Pacquiao weighs 148.5 lbs. So, are you surprised? I was. So was Pacquiao himself, in a pre-fight interview with Larry Merchant, Manny stated he was “surprised” he weighed more than Oscar.
Since the fight hasn’t started yet let’s talk about the rest of this card. So far this SUCKS! The first and second fight ended very early. The second fight (couldn’t even tell you their names) had a guy in there that had no intentions of fighting. He went down three times in the first round, got his paycheck, and got the heck out of dodge. After these (I don’t know maybe 5 minutes total) of fighting I’ve been sitting here listening to Larry Merchant (whom I can’t stand), Jim Lapland (I like him but don’t like his views on MMA), and Emmanuel Steward (can’t stand him either) the whole time. It’s over an hour into the card and I’ve seen about 5 minutes of fighting. What makes it worse is the fact that while these guys have been talking for the past hour there was a fight going on right behind them that they didn’t show. This is exactly why boxing is going downhill. I’ll get off my soap box now. Bring on the “Dream Match”, I’m gettin’ antsy.
Back to my rant…
In the viewers third fight of the night, Resto goes down twice barely surviving the first round before the ref stopped the fight 1:19 into the second round. This is ridiculous! I hope De La Hoya and Pacquiao put on a show or this $55 is going to be my worst investment since purchasing the YAMMA Pit Fighting event.
Here we go. Let’s get ready to rumble!
Oscar De La Hoya vs Manny Pacquiao
Round 1:
Straight right followed by a left lands from Manny. Oscar lands a clean left hook to the body. Two nice left hands land by Manny.
This was a good first round. Looks to be an exciting fight. De La Hoya’s face is red already. Both landed some nice shots but none looked to really hurt the other.
I scored this round 10-9 for Manny.
Round 2:
Manny comes out landing two nice shots to begin the round. Manny looks to be finding his range and making it look easy at this point. Manny is just too fast for De La Hoya.
I scored this round 10-9 for Manny as well.
Round 3:
Oscar finds the body of Manny again. Seems to be all he can hit at htis point. Manny wakes up the last minute of the round and may have stolen the round. This was a close round but…
I scored this round 10-9 for Manny.
Come on Oscar!
Round 4:
Right hand landed by Oscar snapping back the head of Manny but Manny comes back with two straight lefts. Oscar lands another right. Manny again returns the favor with a flurry. This has turned into Manny’s best round of the night so far. Merchant says “this is getting embarrassing”. Manny is just way too fast for him.
I scored this round 10-9 for Manny
Round 5:
68% of Manny’s power punches have landed so far. Big right hand by Manny stuns De La Hoya. Manny looked to be on pace to even out do the 4th round until about 30 seconds to go. Oscar shows some fight. He tried to take the round but…
I scored this round 10-9 for Manny again.
Round 6:
The two trade a few flurry’s to the body. Straight left from Manny with a big “pop” you could hear. Manny returns to being dominate this round and Oscar’s left eye looks like it’s going to be a problem in these later rounds. Half way through we have a shutout.
I scored this round 10-9 for Manny
Round 7:
Manny backs Oscar into the corner and scores at will. Oscar’s left eye is looking bad and this fight looks like it may get stopped soon. Oscar hasn’t even thrown a meaningful punch this round. It’s getting UGLY!
I scored this round 10-8 for Manny
Oscar has just been told in the corner that they’re going to stop the fight if he isn’t throwing punches.
Round 8:
De La Hoya comes out throwing a little more but has no impact. Manny is still scoring a will. He starts teeing off in the last 10 seconds of the round. The corner of Oscar talks Oscar into stopping the fight.
Manny Pacquiao wins the “Dream Match” convincingly to say the least. I was really hoping for a much better fight than this. As Larry Merchant said tonight, “I was hoping to see two great fighter tonight and saw one great fighter. A former great fighter was there also.”
Here are some compu box stats:
De La Hoya Pacquiao
Landed
83 224
Thrown
402 585
21% 38%
Power punches landed
51 195
Nothing but praise from De La Hoya for Manny Pacquiao and made no excuses when given the chance from Larry Merchant (when asked if he felt weak from the weight loss). De La Hoya sounded as if retirement is an option that he is going to look at.
Ricky Hatton is next? We’ll see. Personally, I’d like to see Manny give Floyd Mayweather Jr. a butt whoopin. I know he’s retired but that’s what I’d like to see. I’m disappointed to see Manny beat De La Hoya but I’d love to watch him send Mayweather into a second retirement.
Manny said to Oscar “you’re still my idol” and Oscar replied by saying “no, now you’re my idol”. Pretty cool moment in boxing.
