OKC Man with Cerebral Palsy’s Dream to Become an MMA Fighter Set to Come True

A diagnosis of cerebral palsy threw the first punch, but an Oklahoma City man is fighting back to make his dreams come true.  Garrett Queen, 20, doesn’t think of himself as an individual with specials needs.  “He has never said I can’t do this because I have cerebralgarrett_Page_3 palsy,” said Pam Queen, Garrett’s mother.   “He does not use that as a reason, he pretty much does whatever he puts him mind to.”

Garrett’s mind is set on the octagon – a cage where gladiator’s battle using an array of mixed martial arts.  He comes from a family of wrestlers and mixed martial artists.  Two of his cousins are pro MMA fighters and Garrett has never missed one of their fights.   “I have been a wrestling fan since I was a little kid,” said Garrett.  “My mom took me to the Oklahoma Open every year when they still had it and I watched my cousin Levi Queen wrestle and have been to all of Lucas and Levi’s MMA fights.”

Garrett’s dream of wrestling was cut short as a child. “He did wrestle in an after school program when he was younger but parents were uncomfortable with it because he has such upper body strength, they didn’t’ want their child in there against him.”

But he never gave up hope.  Recently Garrett’s father Randy Queen hired pro mixed martial artist Jeremy Jones as a personal trainer.  “After a few weeks of working with Randy, he asked me if I would wind working with his son Garrett, said Jones”  “It’s been great, when he first started he could only do 10 push-ups and now he can do over 100.  I’ve seen a lot of changes in his motivation, he is now eating healthy and gets up for work every day and then trains with me 2 or 3 times each week.”

It wasn’t long before the questions started coming. “Hey Jeremy get me a fight, he asked me that every time I worked with him,” said Jones.  “So I asked Mike Crawford, the owner at Rage in the Cage if we could do it and I knew he worked with Big Brothers, Big Sisters for a long time and so I knew he would go for it.  And he did.”

Not only did he go for it, but he helped Jones purchase a title belt making Garrett’s ultimate dream come true, his first fight in the cage Saturday, June 27 will be a fight for a title.   Garrett is beyond excited.   “I am fired up and ready to bring home that belt” exclaims Garrett.  “I’ve been waiting for this fight for a long time!”
