FIVE CHAMPIONS CROWNED AS BATTLE ARENA KICK OFF BIG 2013

RANJEET Baria delighted his home town fans by capturing one of five titles up for grabs on Battle Arena’s massive year-opening ‘Night Of Champions’ card at a packed Club Republic in Leicester on Saturday.

The Leicester Shootfighters man topped the 25-fight bill in the clash with Joe Vidler, of Maidstone club MMA Evolution, for the ISKA British 71.5kg belt and did not disappoint the expectant crowd.
Baria had to be patient as Vidler looked to take the contest to the ground at every opportunity, but that approach paid off in the third when he was able to lock on the decisive triangle choke with Vidler on top, forcing his opponent to submit at 1.27 of the third and final round.
Josh Neale is set to represent Team GB at this year’s Fighters Source World Championship events and warmed up for those by claiming the British 57kg title after forcing a technical submission against Phil Tomkins.
Warriors MMA man Neale went to ground early and tried to look for the finisher against his opponent from Ashby-de-la-Zouch club Devil’s Pit, only for Tomkins to thwart him with good defence.
However, the referee stopped the contest at 2.29 of the first round as Neale applied the armbar. There was no tap from Tomkins, who was unhappy to be halted, but the officials are within their rights to end proceedings if they feel there is a danger of fighters suffering injury.
Neale’s club mate Chris Fensom defeated James Bray, of The Pound MMA, to claim the 84kg British championship by forcing him to submit with an armbar late in the first round.
The early exchanges saw Bray land with the knees before Fensom took him to the mat, working into a strong position on top and trying to get the ground and pound going. He then grabbed a stray arm from Bray before the submission came at 3.18.
The night’s other British title fight saw Matt Bolsover carry off the 93kg belt after a thunderous TKO finish against Dan Wilce in the first round of their contest.
Wilce, of Oxford’s Next Level MMA, targeted Bolsover’s legs with his knees in the opening exchanges, but when they went to the floor it was the Sheffield man who wrestled himself into the dominant position.
When the finish came it was spectacular. Bolsover took Wilce down with a powerful kick to the head and then jumped on him before unloading a series of punches, leading the referee waving off the bout at 2.26.
The other title contest saw Kevin Richardson, of Peterborough Freestyle, up against Johnny Gillan for the ISKA 84kg National championship, and it was Devil’s Pit man Gillan who took a close-fought, technical contest via split decision after three rounds.
The undercard proved just as action-packed as the championship match-ups, with Baria’s Leicester Shootfighters club mates Jake Constantinou, Alex Feary and Kiro Kiffin all claiming impressive stoppage victories. Fellow Leicester club 1st Legion also had Josh McManus, Wade Bass and Rob Large triumphing.
The Gannon’s MMA clan provided two more local winners as well in the form of Gianni Brigginshaw and Paul Gannon.
Elsewhere on the undercard, Wellingborough club Shudan MMA enjoyed a one hundred percent win ratio on the day, with Dan Beckett,Steve Li and Piotr Birtels all claiming impressive victories.
Debutant Brett Francis announced himself in impressive style with a stunning first round TKO over Danny Holt. His The MMA Gym club mates Damian Ammar and Mariuz Kobeszko also reigned supreme.
Sam Hill and Luke Carter (both Next Level MMA), Matt King (5 Elements MMA), Craig Smith (Warriors MMA), Ash Snart(Peterborough Warriors) and Greshna Adem (BST) were the other undercard victors.
Special mention must also be given to Le Battle Combat Club duo Mohammed Addajou and Josh Demoux. They travelled from France to fight, and although they did not win their respective they both proved game opponents.
Battle Arena are planning to return to Leicester at the end of June with an 18-Fight card which will see the city’s finest mixed martial artists take on others from around the UK and the world. Watch this space for more details.
