On May 30, 2014, Mississauga native Alex Ricci, will be fighting under Substance Caged Combat once again. SCC will be holding their second event at the end of the month featuring top lightweight prospect Alex Ricci VS Resurrection Fighting Alliance and Bellator MMA veteran, EJ Brooks. Ricci could not be more excited to step back in the cage and compete against yet another high level opponent.
“I’m very excited to be getting back in the cage and showing everybody my skills. This is what I love to do… It’s awesome to be fighting so close to home and there are great promotions like the SCC!”
It’s no secret that Ricci will be the hometown favorite come May 30th, and he is certainly not one to frown upon the idea. Having fought in other cities across the country and within the province so close to home, it may not quite compare to fighting in Toronto this coming Friday evening, says Ricci.
“It’s always a pleasure to be fighting so close to home in front of my family, friends and fans. This is a blessing and I’m here to represent where I come from! Ontario is building some of the toughest fighters around and I’m so grateful to be a part of that!
When it came to finding an opponent for Alex, there had been some ups and downs but the fighter scheduled (EJ Brooks) is certainly reaches the level of high level quality. Brooks has been victorious in two major organizations and will fight in Canada for the very first time at SCC 2.0. Even though Ricci is fully aware of how talented Brooks is, especially when it comes to his wrestling background, Ricci remains focused, driven and positive in his skills.
“EJ Brooks is a good athlete who has a wrestling background. They are both good opponents but I believe I am much stronger and skilled. “
If you are from Southern Ontario, you already know that the distance between each city is generally anywhere from half an hour to an hour maximum. This leaves several options for fighters to not only train out of their home gym, but also enables them to travel to neighboring facilities. A lot of great young talent has been bred throughout these gyms all competing for one thing, to be the best. This however, does not discourage fighters to venture out and train with opposing peers from different locations throughout the province.
“Right now I’m mostly training at M1, Para Bellum, and Bang Fitness. My teammates and I are always developing and improving my full MMA game. I’m very fortunate to be coming from a strong striking background and this sets the foundation of my wrestling and grappling skills. Also like to thank Joslin’s MMA and TapouT Burlington.”
Along with the growth of the support from each city, training facility and each other, Alex feels this is outstanding for our province and the sport of mixed martial arts, not only in the present, but for the future of the sport as well.
“This is a great time for MMA in Ontario. We’re going to be seeing so much talent developing in this area and I believe it will be the Mecca for MMA fighters.”
EJ Brooks is no easy task. This fight could elevate Ricci’s career to exactly where he wants and needs to be a lot sooner rather than expected. The 33 year old Ricci understands what a win means on May 30, 2014 at SCC 2, and will be ready for any challenge.
“A win will put me one step closer to signing a UFC contract and as long as I’m healthy, strong and happy I’m going to continue to train, fight and compete. That’s what I do.”
The dynamic structure of Southern, ON has allowed several fighters to become not only training partners, but an MMA family. Alex Ricci understands this and would like to thank family, friends, training partners, and coaches.
“I just want to thank my family and everybody who has supported me through this training camp. I’m so grateful to have so much love and support from the people around me. It would be impossible to be done without my coaches and teammates. Thank you everybody for all the support and love and I’m excited for May 30, 2014.”
