Liddell vs Couture 4 – WHY?

From the rumor mill is another matchup between Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture. The Sun UK is reporting that the UFC is setting up what they call a “huge main event”.  UFC 99 is scheduled for June 13th and will be UFC’s first venture into Germany.  An official anouncement is expected soon.  Frankly, who really cares?  First of all, we just got done with UFC 91and we’re already discussing UFC 99?  Secondly, haven’t we seen this fight three times before?  What’s the big deal?  After Couture beat Liddell in their first meeting in 2003 at UFC 43 it was Liddell who KO’d Couture twice sending Captain America into retirment right there in the ring at UFC 57.  Before this rumor was a much more intriguing rumor featuring Chuck Liddell vs Anderson Silva at UFC 95 in February.  Reportedly, this fight is no longer under consideration after Silva’s headlining fight against Patrick Cote at UFC 90 in October flopped, drawing just 300,000 PPV buys.  I know Silva isn’t as big of a draw as some of the other stars but come on – it was Patrick Cote.  No one thought this was going to get out of the first round and in times like these not many wanted to pay $50 for another Mike Tyson vs Peter McNeely.  Maybe if the UFC would concentrate on bringing over some of the top heavyweights in the world from Affliction instead of giving them the boot over video game contracts they’d have more options than a fourth matchup between Couture and Liddell.
