Jorge Gurgel has been dropped by the UFC and has signed with Strikeforce. Everyone has seen this coming with Gurgel dropping 4 of his 7 fights in the UFC. One defeat even coming from Cole Miller by the way of triangle choke. You may say “big deal” but it is a big deal when you’re as highly praised as Gurgel is in the jiu-jitsu community. Jorge Gurgel is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and was considered to be one of the most dangerous 155 lb. fighters out there, but those kind of discussions have faded after losing 3 of the last 4 fights. The good news came right before Gurgel was dropped by the UFC. Gurgel and Aaron Riley received the “Fight of the Night” honors after their slugfest at UFC 91 earning him a $60,000 bonus. Not too bad considering his purse was only $10,000. J.G. doesn’t seem to be heartbroken over the UFC departure, saying he feels excited, re-motivated, and feels signing with Strikeforce is a new start. Hopefully Gurgel will go back to his roots and implement a jiu-jitsu gameplan that he seemed to throw out the window while fighting witht the UFC. Those jiu-jitsu skills are what catapulted him to a 9-1 professional MMA career with 8 of those 9 wins coming by the way of submission. Good luck to Jorge Gurgel, it’s about time he shows everyone why he’s been so highly regarded in the 155 pound division.
