I got a chance to sit down with ‘Jesse’ James Wallace to talk about his amateur career:

How did you get started in MMA & did you ever expect to get this far to becoming a Professional MMA?

“ I got started in MMA by watching for a while and just messing around with it. A good family friend Steven Gaines saw I had some potential and took me to the local mma gym. I started picking things up immediately and the rest is history. At the beginning I didn’t think I was good enough, but as I kept learning and fighting tougher opponents I realized I had a shot. It’s awesome to be making my pro debut but I have bigger goals that I’m trying to achieve. This is the start of achieving my dream.”

Was 20 amateur fights something you set a goal before turning Pro?

“ I didn’t have a set number of fights in mind. I just wanted to fight the best amateurs I could until I felt like I was well rounded enough to take the next step.”

Remembering your first amateur fight…whats the difference now that your at the end of your amateur career?

“ Well my first amateur fight I was actually a replacement after about 3 months of training. I had only learned a little bit of jiu jitsu so I went straight to what little I knew. Now I try to work on every area of my game and focus on my performance in my last fight to try to improve every time I step in there.”

What was your most memorable toughest fight?

“ I have had a ton of tough fights but it has to go to the Nick Davis fight. We went all 5 rounds and it was back and forth the whole time. I really enjoyed that fight.”

What Titles do you hold & which one meant the most?

“ At one time as an amateur I had 5 titles in 2 different weight classes. I was the Bang FC Lightweight & Featherweight Champion, Innovative Combat Championship Featherweight Champion, ICC Featherweight Champion & my favorite the V3 Featherweight Champion.”

How’s your training coming along & are you having to cut much weight for this fight?

“ My training is going great for this fight. I have a great team at Oxford Fitness Kickboxing and cross training at Memphis Judo and Jiu Jitsu. Also my personal trainer Matt Webb gets me in the best shape of my life. The weight cut is never really an issue for me because I do it the right way.”

What would you say to your opponent right now if you had a chance to talk to him?

“ Good luck and I hope your ready to put on a show.”

I want to thank you for taking the time to do this interview & always hoping for the best as you enter your Professional career. Anybody you want to thank or give a shout out to you go right ahead and go for it.
