ProElite.com has reported that the upcoming welterweight match up at StrikeForce between submission artist Jake Shields and submission master Drew Fickett has been canceled. Unfortunately the grapplers dream match and championship title bout has been canceled due to Jake Shields injuring his back. The fight was scheduled to take place on the March 29 StrikeForce card. The event will feature Frank Shamrock taking on Cung Le for the middleweight championship belt. Other notable match ups on the card will include Nick Diaz battling Japanese fighter Jae Suk Lim, Gilbert Melendez squaring off against Gabe Lemley, Mike Pyle vs Wayne Cole and Joey Villasenor vs Ryan Jensen.

MMAWeekly.com confirmed the news on Tuesday with Drew Fickett’s camp who also said that EliteXC is currently working on finding a replacement for Shields. So far a replacement for the upcoming star has yet to be announced. Even if a replacement was found it is unknown if he would be able to complete all of the necessary medical testing in time for the fight. Unfortunately this means the fight could end up being scrapped all together. This is sad news for EliteXC fans who were expecting this to be one of the most competitive matches on the card. As of now ProElite has not made any official announcement regarding a replacement. Apparently the fight could still happen in the near future. Sources close the fight have stated that the bout could possibly take place on June 14 in Hawaii. It all depends on how things work out this weekend at the StrikeForce event. Stay tuned for more shocking MMA news! |
