Dana White on ESPN Radio

Dana White made an appearance today on ESPN radio. Be sure to listen, Dana White always gives a great interview. He’ll either sound really great (as he does here) or he’ll say something crazy and outlandish – either way, he’s a great interview.
A couple highlights of the interview include Dana quoting Lorenzo Fertitta, “Boxing has become horse racing…there’s one big fight a year and that’s it”. Dana also touched on the “huge misconception” that ‘hardcore fans’ are ‘looking for blood’. I was happy to hear him talk about this. Is that really what people think when MMA folks talk about ‘hardcore fans’? When we refer to hardcore fans we’re talking about those who understand the sport of mixed martial arts and are true fans of the art and athletes. We’re not referring to ‘hardcore’ as being brutal, barbaric, or looking for blood. Good to hear Dana clear that one up. What I didn’t agree with is the fact that Dana once again says that the UFC is looking to bring in the ‘best fighters in the world’. If that’s the case Dana, why is Werdum out and Justin McCully in? or why is Gurgel out and Junie Browning in? Junie isn’t near being one of the best in the world and he’s a character. Characters in MMA is something else that was discussed in the interview. Dana says “we’re not entertainment, we’re a real sport” when talking about characters like Kimbo Slice. If he’s not going after the characters for entertainment and he’s looking for the best in the world because “we’re a real sport” why does Junie Browning have a UFC contract?
