Cage Warriors Alumni Having Major League Success

Every major league fighter has to have paid their dues in the regional promotions, with very few exceptions. There are a handful who made The Ultimate Fighter without pro bouts under their belts elsewhere. But by and large when you’re signed to one of the leading promotions you’ll already have the experience necessary to justify your place on the roster.

The only definite way to get a call to the ‘big show’ is to keep winning. But there are certain avenues that have proven to be successful time and time again. One of those is Cage Warriors Fighting Championship. Of any European show, Cage Warriors have been regularly sending more of their fighters to the UFC than anybody else over the past few years. Not only that but they have also been having great success.

The breakout star of the past few years has been Conor McGregor. He is a fighter who was two-weight world champion under the Cage Warriors banner. McGregor has done his fair share of talking. However, his fighting has said more than his words ever could. He has four knockouts from his 5-0 UFC start and has earned himself a title shot against Jose Aldo. He comes in as 6/5 with betfair and the fact that he is the first Irishman to fight for a major world title after only five Octagon fights is a huge feat.

He is not alone. There are plenty more who have gone on to form a part of the sport’s elite. Some have been CWFC champions and others have been top contenders. Jim Alers was dominant in the featherweight division and earned his call last year. There has also been Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Cathal Pendred, Phil Harris and, recently, Joe Duffy to name just a few others.

What is it about the promotion that breeds top-level success? It comes down to their basic ethos of bringing in the top fighters from around Europe and focusing on the quality of matchups. Any fighter who has battled their way to the top of a division will have had to face consistently tough opposition to do so. That means that when the major leagues come calling you’re battle hardened, well-travelled and confident. Having that weight of experience behind you is the perfect recipe to success. That is why we have seen this huge influx of solid fighters from one place.
