And the Award Goes To… XFC 24!
Three of the largest promotions in the country had events this weekend. XFC 24, UFC 161, and WSOF 3 all took place this past weekend. MMA fans had plenty of opportunities to catch great live MMA action. If you watched UFC 161 then you were taken on an adventure of 4+ hours of pretty boring fights. The most exciting thing about UFC 161 was James Krause’s amazing 3rd round submission victory over Sam Stout.
The World Series of Fighting was back with their 3rd event as they had a main event of Jon Fitch vs. Josh Burkman. Burkman shocked the MMA world by finishing Fitch with a Guillotine that put Fitch to sleep. Burkman had the class and sportsmanship to realize that Fitch was out while referee, Steve Mazzagatti, stood nearby apparently in another world. Aside from that, WSOF 3 was a good night of fights, but nothing spectacular.
Then there was the Xtreme Fighting Championships. The XFC was making a long awaited return home to Tampa, FL. The hometown fans had been anxiously awaiting the return of the XFC, and were awarded greatly with XFC 24. The atmosphere before the fights even began was electric and this carried directly into the intensity of the fights. The main card was stacked and none of the fights disappointed. The pre-lims had their share of great fights, but the main card shined above all others. The ladies put on a great fight as Cortney Casey made her pro debut a stellar performance. She took control early and set the pace of the fight, finishing Warren with a standing Rear Naked Choke. Eric Reynolds followed that with a stellar performance of his own. He locked in a standing Arm Triangle and finished Kevin Forant early into the 1st round. MMA veteran, Luis Santos, followed that with a blink and you’ll miss it TKO over Dave Courchaine. Perhaps FOTN was up next in the co-main event. Ricky Rainey looked phenomenal as he slowly picked apart Reggie Pena. Rainey was landing numerous big shots and then connected with a huge head kick that knocked Pena into another dimension. Rainey pounced and finished Pena with less than 0:30 in the 1st round. The main event was for the vacant Lightweight Championship. It looked to be a great match up, but it would prove to be a great night for Scott Holtzman. Holtzman controlled the entire fight until he finished a very bloody John Mahlow halfway through the 2nd round.
XFC 24 had many phenomenal fights that will provide many amazing highlights for XFC fans. The XFC has some great things coming to them soon. XFC 25 is set to go down in Albuquerque, NM on September 6th. From there the XFC is facing expansion into South America and other areas in the coming months. To overlook the XFC would be a crime! John Prisco and his team are doing amazing things for MMA. They take care of their fighters, they take care of their media, and most importantly they treat the fans to the best there is in LIVE MMA action!
