On January 24, Alyssa “G.I. Jane” Vasquez will take on champion, Amberlynn Orr, for the V3Fights’ Women’s Bantamweight Championship.  Vasquez has been asking for this fight and feels confident that next Saturday night she will walk out of Minglewood Hall as the new 135 pound champion.

She is currently 6-4 in MMA and 1-0 in kickboxing and trains out of IMMORTAL MMA in Enterprise, AL.  On top of that, she also has been Active Duty in the US Army for 11 years and is currently a Staff Sergeant.

She weighed in on her opportunity and shared her thoughts on this upcoming fight:

How did you get started in MMA?

I have always loved fighting, so I used to get into a lot of street fights and random scuffles.  One night in 2008, I went to check out some local fights, on a whim, but was late and missed the fights.  I stayed at the venue (local bar/pool hall) to play pool, when I was approached by a local MMA coach.  He asked if I was interested in fighting and I said ‘yes’ and the rest is history.

You have been asking for this fight for a while.  Any particular reason why you want to fight Amberlynn Orr?

It was less about the opponent and more about the promotion.  V3 is an amazing organization, and I saw a way in by pursuing this fight.  I believe I’m the one that will stop her, and it will be an honor to represent such an awesome promotion.

Speaking of Amberlynn Orr, what are your thoughts on your opponent and where do you feel you have the advantage in this fight?

I know that Amberlynn has some legitimate skill and is awesome on the ground…but I also know that there are some chinks in her armor, and I’m going to try to expose them.  I feel I have the advantage standing.  I don’t see Amberlynn as having much power from standing.  I’ve got a few things planned to keep it standing.  Violence of action and solid defense.  I will knock her out or get a TKO in the first round.

How do you feel about the growing popularity of WMMA?

I have mixed emotions with the recent boom.  My love of the sport is satisfied by knowing we’re gaining fans and making believers out of naysayers, but it is a double-edged sword.  With increased attention comes the leeches, the opportunists, and the pop-up groupies that want to try their hand at MMA.  At the end of the day, I have to set the negative aspects aside and say that I am encouraged and excited about it.  I started in a time when I had to fight in secret – so having support is a welcome change.

Any final comments?

I would just like to thank Rod (Galvan) and Chantein (Wasion) for allowing me this opportunity.  Words can’t describe the joy I felt when I got the word from Chan and I am beyond grateful.  Aside from that, I’d just like to thank my Fight Fam, as well as my sponsors MMA RoadHog, Sports Food Inc, Death Wish Coffee, USA Eagle, Gruntworks, and Sicchic Fightwear for believing in me.  I look forward to honoring their faith on the 24th by bringing home that title.
