On May 10th, Australian Fighting Championship (AFC) will kick off its two tournaments at AFC 5 at the Melbourne Pavilion, Flemington to crown new middleweight and welterweight champions.


Both tournaments are stacked with exciting and talented fighters all vying for a shot at the championship. The four winners in each tournament will advance to the semi-finalis atAFC 6. The 2 winners of semis will fight at AFC 7 to crown the middleweight and welterweight champions of the AFC. The eventual winner will also receive worldwide recognition which will open the door to bigger opportunities.


The Middleweight tournament is full of great fighters all in with a chance to advance. Four-time Olympian Judoka Daniel Kelly brings plenty of experience and heart to the ring while his opponent Chris ‘Bad Boy’ Birch will to looking to strike his way to victory. Vik ‘The Spartan’ Grujic is a tough all round fighter who will be desperate to break his two fight losing streak. Steven ‘The Steamroller’ Kennedy is an experienced and dangerous striker to watch out for as well.

The internationals are also ones to watch out for. Bor ‘Playbor’ Bratovz from Slovenia is as tough as nails and always looks to finish; definitely one the fans will enjoy watching. New Zealander Cole David has an impressive five knockout wins to his name and will look to put Kennedy to sleep.


The Welterweight tournament is equally as packed with exciting fighters trying to prove their position in Australian MMA. Dean Purdon has won three battles by decision and will look to get his first finish against the debutant fighter Peter ‘The Bulldog’ Davenport. Zein Saliba is currently undefeated in four fights and will look to secure another submission victory. Alex ‘The Hulk’ Volkanovski versus Corey ‘The Major’ Nelson is set to be one of the most entertaining and brutal fights of the night. Expect blood and plenty of stand-up action.

Walber ‘Tete’ De Barros is a Brazilian with a black belt in BJJ which should makes his fight with Saliba a very interesting ground battle.


With two incredible tournaments commencing and thirteen awesome fights in total, AFC 5 is going to be the most exciting MMA event this year.
